A custom-fit oral appliance is a highly effective treatment for sleep breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. It also addresses associated challenges like persistent fatigue and teeth grinding. Similar in fit to a sports mouthguard, these oral devices serve as an alternative to CPAP machines and surgery. They work by repositioning the jaw to open the central airway, ensuring an unobstructed flow of oxygen.

Screening

We understand the importance of early detection of sleep apnea. That’s why we offer a screening process for new patients to assess their risk of having the disorder. The screening process includes a questionnaire conducted by Dr. Herndon, who will ask about the patient’s symptoms and risk factors for sleep apnea. If the patient is already a dental patient, they can also request a free screening during their next regular dental appointment. The screening process is an essential step in identifying patients who may have sleep apnea and require further evaluation.

Diagnosis

After our initial screening, patients at risk for sleep apnea will be referred to a qualified physician for a formal diagnosis. The physician will perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination, review of medical history, and a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis.

Following the diagnosis, the physician will collaborate with our team to determine the most appropriate treatment, which may include CPAP therapy or an oral appliance.

  • Your diagnosis and treatment options are presented by a qualified medical physician.
  • If patients already have a physician, we will coordinate with them. Otherwise, we can connect patients with a physician for either telemedicine or in-person consultations to discuss diagnosis and treatment options.

Treatment

If the physician determines that the patient is a candidate for an oral sleep appliance, the next step involves a thorough oral exam and taking dental impressions of the patient’s teeth and bite. This critical step enables us to create a custom-fit appliance that is both comfortable and effective in treating sleep apnea.

Dr. Herndon will perform a digital scan of the patient’s teeth and bite at our office. We will then send these impressions to a specialized lab to craft an appliance tailored to the patient’s specific needs.

Once the custom-fit appliance is ready, we will deliver it to the patient and provide in-person training on its use and care. We will also schedule follow-up appointments to ensure the appliance is working effectively and make any necessary adjustments.

They work by moving your jaw forward to help open your airway, and keep you breathing easier.
