What is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep-breathing disorder characterized by breathing pauses that occur multiple times per hour during the night, caused by a blocked or partially blocked airway. These interruptions result in reduced oxygen flow, leading to micro-awakenings that severely impact quality sleep and overall health. An estimated 22 million Americans suffer from this condition, with 80 percent of suspected cases remaining undiagnosed. Untreated sleep apnea increases the risk of drowsy driving, workplace incidents, and serious health conditions such as stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
- Persistent snoring
- Chronic fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability, depression, or mood swings
- Pauses in breathing during sleep
- Gasping or choking at night
- Morning headaches
- Dry mouth or sore throat upon waking
- Frequent urination at night
While these are the most common symptoms of sleep apnea, individuals may experience one, several, or even none of these signs, which makes sleep apnea particularly dangerous.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
The CPAP is the most commonly prescribed treatment for sleep apnea and other sleep-breathing disorders. Its proven ability to improve sleep patterns and airflow is why many continue to use CPAP devices. However, many patients struggle with using them for various reasons.
At Pacific Sleep Apnea Center, we offer oral appliance therapy as a non-invasive alternative treatment option. Oral appliance therapy involves a custom-made device worn over your teeth while you sleep, similar to a mouthguard. This comfortable device gently moves your jaw forward, preventing soft tissues from collapsing and blocking your airway, thus keeping air flowing freely, reducing snoring, and ensuring a more restful night for you and your loved ones.
